Excerpt from Banana Shout

February 10th, 2000

"On their fifth day out at sea, after their warm beer and raw fish breakfast, Striker let loose an ear splitting wail, "Land Ho! Land Ho!" Tavo shaded his eyes with his hand and squinted in the direction he was pointing. Over the horizon he could barely glimpse the green tops of mountains. White Sea birds hovered above the boat, and a school of porpoises leapt over the bow as Striker headed for shore. Positive omens, he hopped, for what was to come. As they drew closer to Jamaica, the water changed from deep navy blue to crystal-clear emerald green, and the distant mountaintops loomed lushly with tropical rain forest splendor. Then to his delight, and astonishment, there appeared the most pristine, white-sand beach he'd ever imagined, stretching endlessly for miles, surrounded by a teaming coral reef. He gazed open-mouthed at this scene that had surely been created by an almighty power, it seemed untouched by human hands. At last, a paradise of infinite splendor. He felt he was having a religious experience. Some god or force beyond himself was communicating with him, telling him this place was created for his soul's survival, what a way for an atheist to feel. Beauty, peace, and tranquility still existed in the world, and he was part of it! Every cell in his body tingled. He sensed stillness, clarity, a mingling of natural colors more mind-blowing than any LSD trip. As Striker eased his old scow of a boat through the pink, purple, and golden coral heads, fish leaped out of the waters and soared with wings over the mirror-like ocean. Other schools of rainbow-colored fish played below the bow, as visible as if he was seeing them through an aquarium glass. Striker moored the boat against a concrete dock on the shore of an Amazon-like river that appeared from nowhere. It seemed to run from the jungle mountains beyond, and dump its brownish peat-colored fresh water into the sea at one end of the beach."
