Benefit for Katy Thacker… Protector of Our Environment

Katy began her romance with the sea and reefs surrounding Negril when she first came to Jamaica in 1981. It soon became apparent to her, as an avid snorkeller and scuba diver, that the reefs were deteriorating and the beautiful tropical fish were becoming scarce. In 1990 she spearheaded the founding of the Negril Coral Reef Preservation Society, along with a group of concerned watersports operators. The first major project for the NCRPS, with the help of it's sister organization REEF RELIEF in the Florida Keys, was to install 35 permanent mooring buoys in order to reduce anchor damage to the reefs caused by recreational boats. To date, over 200,000 anchorages have been avoided by the use of these buoys.

The success of the mooring buoy project encouraged NCRPS to take bolder and more progressive steps in protecting our marine environment. Katy, first as President, then as Executive Director of the NCRPS, attracted a strong working Board of Directors and initiated the following… and many, many other environmental projects including the Junior Ranger Programme in 12 schools with over 800 graduates.

Katy has always fought to preserve the environment. Now she is also fighting lymphoma. If you wish to contribute to The Katy Thacker Fund, donations are gratefully accepted.
