#12 The Ackee
#12 The Ackee

October 22nd, 2001

In what can be best described as an odd reference to a Monty Python show, today on the Negril Today page we are featuring the Ackee! The ackee is part of the Jamaican national dish, ackee and saltfish! Today's picture shows both ripe and unrip ackee, of which there is an important distinction! Until the ackee ripens and shows it's non-edible black seeds, it is not safe to eat. But when open, seeds removed and cleaned from the outer covering, the yellow fruit remaining from the inside makes a great base for many tastes, not just saltfish! Many people compare the look of prepared ackee to that of scrambled eggs, but scarambled eggs it isn't! It's Ackee!
