Heading for the Dugout

Heading for the Dugout

March 18th, 2003

The more things change, the more you appreciate a place like Negril! Take for instance this dugout canoe sitting stoically on the soft white sands of the Negril beach. This canoe was carved from the trunk of a large silk cotten tree, in one solid piece with no seams to effect buoyancy. Talk about water proof, a brilliant design! This scene has been repeated since the days of the Tainos, the human inhabitants living on the island back in 1492 when one Christopher Columbus decided that he has found Asia. Although he was wrong by a few thousand miles and the diseases that his expedition and future visits wiped out the Tainos in Jamaica, some aspects of the Taino live on today! Canoe is a Taino word, just as the word hammock! Tobacco is also a Taino word, but it did not refer to substance smoked, but the smoking device itself. Thanks for reading this trivia ramblings, Negril sometimes does that to you... (grin)

Daily Music News: The Negril Entertainment Network will be taking a break as world events are effecting our bandwidth usage for the webcasts. As soon as the NEN can get back online without breaking the Internet's back (pun intended) then look for some new features brought to you by the creative talent of the NEN! For the latest in Negril music news, keep checking here, the Shows & Events listing and our new NEN (Negril Entertainment Network) page located in our Entertainment section! As always, you can check the Negril Message Board for more information about the live webcasts and chats! As the time for each live NEN event approaches, check for details on the Negril Message Board and the new NEN section. This will guide you through the procedure to join in the live web cast and chat in the Negril Chat Room.
